M sia and China ensure economic growth not at expense of environment

NANNING: Green was the topic at the 8th China-Asean expo with the Prime Minister and his Chinese counterpart agreeing that economic growth and expansion should not come at the expense of “the wonders of the natural world”. Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said governments should do more to raise public awareness on the environment, promote environmental education and develop environmentally-sound technologies. “We can build an ice rink or put a roof on a football stadium, but we cannot do the same with glaciers or the ozone layer. “What we can do is change our ways and by promoting cleaner technology and reducing fossil fuel emissions, start to reverse the damage that has already been done,” he said in his keynote address at the opening ceremony of expo in which Malaysia is the “country of honour”. Najib said the nations present at the 11th Asean-China Summit in 2007 had agreed that the environment should be among the priority areas for cooperation. It is learnt that Nagamas Inter-national Bhd has been allocated about 2,500ha at the industrial park to be developed with green features. A total of 130 Malaysian companies and government agencies are taking part in the expo which began yesterday and will end on Oct 26. Najib arrived here on Thursday night. He was accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and received by Malaysian officials in China after his private jet landed at the Nanning Wuxu International Airport. The Prime Minister is here at the southern Chinese city, which is the provincial capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, for a one-day working visit. Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Guangdong chapter secretary-general Eng Kim Huat said Najib's visit to China would improve bilateral trade and add weight to the image of Malaysia's commercial sector in China.
